The establishment’s origins trace back to its founding as a combination of a funeral home and furniture business by Henry Tenge. Situated at the intersection of Middle and Broadway Streets, it was a cornerstone of the community. In 1872, the business found new ownership in Brent Lovell, a skilled cabinetmaker. Eventually, ownership transitioned once more in 1889, marking the entry of the Harper family into its lineage. Edward Harper, born in 1855 and the son of William Harper from County Tyrone, Ireland, took the helm.
Edward Harper, was not only a skilled cabinetmaker like his predecessor Lovell but also a dedicated public servant, serving as the Jefferson Township Trustee. His family had deep roots in eastern Allen County, with his parents among the original settlers of the region. In 1840, his father William played a pivotal role in the organization of the township, alongside notable figures such as Jared and Alanson Whitney, Aretas and Reuben Powers, Henry Castleman, and Joseph Gronauer.
